On this date, February 10th, in 1942, the first Medal of Honor ceremony, for a WWII honoree, was held to award US Army Second Lieutenant (2d Lt.) Alex Nininger for his heroic fighting at the Battle of Bataan, in the Philippines. 2d Lt. Nininger, a brave officer, led repeated counterattacks against the Japanese troops that outnumbered and outgunned the American forces. With his rifle, hand grenades, and hand-to-hand combat, Nininger fought through and destroyed several enemy foxholes while being wounded 3 times. Eventually, 2d Lt. Nininger was killed while taking out 3 more enemy soldiers. When bestowed with the Medal of Honor after being killed in action (KIA), this is described as being awarded for valor "posthumously" (after dying)
And, make sure to come back tomorrow for our weekly 'Be a Stud Citizen' Message. This week's message will highlight the achievements of the 2nd of 4 African-American Medal of Honor recipients we're featuring for Black History Month.

Today's Interesting Quote from Our Flag
"(He had) no feelings of hate,
and did not think he could ever kill anyone out of hatred.
He had none of the swagger of the natural warrior.
He worked hard and had a strong sense of duty."
-Malcolm Gladwell, retelling what 2d Lt. Nininger had written in a letter to him while enroute to the Battle of Bataan. Obviously, Nininger's brave actions showed that his sense of duty overcame the feelings he had written about the Japanese

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... recalls a legendary WWII jokester, who performed more than 150 performances for American troops in the Pacific ...
The iconic Bob Hope, in the summer of 1944, traveled more than 30,000 miles, dangerously from island to island in the South Pacific, to entertain troops. And here is a video showing one of his largest shows in front of 20,000 war zone troops.
