Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... remembers the birthday and life of Rosa Parks ...
... remembers the birthday and life of Rosa Parks ...
Two of the four states that celebrate "Rosa Parks Day" (CA, MO, OH & OR), honor her on her birthday of February 4th. Interestingly none of these states have a direct connection to Rosa. So, why would these states pay tribute to her each year? Because, simply put, she's called the 'First Lady of the Civil Rights movement.' Why? Because on December 1st of 1955, she rightfully and courageously refused to give up her bus seat to a white man and move further to the back, to the 'Colored' section, of the city bus. For this "unlawful act," Rosa was arrested by Montgomery, Alabama Police. So, Rosa fought back against this demeaning, ugly way of life. She joined forces with Martin Luther King Jr., filed a lawsuit against the Montgomery public bus system, and began the 'Montgomery Bus Boycott.'
More than a year later, while she and many others continued to picket and refuse to ride city busses that discriminated against blacks, the US Supreme Court called for the Montgomery bus system to stop discriminating (stop treating passengers unequally) / to allow blacks and whites (all citizens) to sit wherever they want on the bus (as pictured below in 1956 - after the court's decision).

Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"I would like to be remembered
as a person who wanted to be free...
so other people would be also free."

"You fell over 60 feet and somehow didn't get hurt?"
