How did NM get its name?:
A Spanish explorer expedition (trip) in 1581 named the region north of the Rio Grande River "San Felipe del Nuevo Mexico." These explorers believed this region, which later was renamed the New Mexico Territory, looked like and hoped it would have treasures similar to those found in the Valley of Mexico. It had no such treasures, but the name "Nuevo Mexico" (New Mexico) stuck.
Nickname of NM:
Land of Enchantment
Notable NM Landmarks and Historic Sites:
1) Trinity Site - where the world's first nuclear weapon was tested
2) White Sands National Park
3) Carlsbad Caverns National Park which has some amazing caves to explore
