On this date, July 9, in 1868, the 14th Amendment was ratified (became law) when South Carolina's lawmakers approved it - the 28th state (representing at least 3/4 of the Union) to do so.  It was one of three Reconstruction Amendments enabled after the Civil War.  The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to former slaves and provided equal protection of laws to all citizens.
