Today's Story from Our Flag
... recalls an amazing slave escape, via steamship, during the Civil War ...
Picture
On this date, May 13, in 1862, Robert Smalls and other slave crew members, stole and steered the CSS Planter, a Confederate Navy gun steamship (pictured above).  Around 3 a.m. in the morning, Smalls, dressed like the regular ship Captain, was able to pickup the crew's family members and sail past Fort Sumter without notice.  As Smalls steered the ship towards the Union Navy, the crew raised a white flag, just before the Union ships shot their cannons.  When within shouting distance, acting ship Captain Smalls yelled, "Good morning, sir! I've brought you some of the old United States guns, sir!"
Mission Accomplished.  Smalls, his crew, and their families had turned over a Confederate ship to the Union and set themselves free.  Robert Smalls, pictured below, was later named as Captain of a Union ship - the first black to ever do so.
