Today's Moment to Remember
... a pioneering woman with many 'Firsts' ...
... a pioneering woman with many 'Firsts' ...
On yesterday's date, December 3, in 1962, Edith Sampson took the Oath of Office as the first African-American female judge in America. She served for 17 years in the Municipal Court of Chicago and Circuit Court of Cook County, IL. This was the last of many 'Firsts' in Edith's life - an African-American woman who broke many barriers and embraced her ethnicity in America. While working full-time, she graduated at the top of her class from the John Marshall Law School in 1925. Then, in 1927, she became the first woman to earn a Master of Laws degree from the Loyola University Graduate Law School. Her social work, expertise in law, public speeches against the spread of Cold War Communism (including the quote shown at the top of the page) led her to become appointed by President Truman, in 1950, as the first African-American delegate representing the United States at the United Nations (UN). And, finally, before serving as a judge, she was appointed by President Eisenhower to serve as a U.S. representative to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) - the first African-American woman to do so.
