Today's Moment to Remember
... the 36th state to gain statehood ...

On this date, October 31, in 1864, Nevada, was admitted as the 36th State in the Union.  It's official nickname is "The Silver State" because of the metal's impact on Nevada's economy and mining history.  So, why does its flag proclaim 'Battle Born'?  That title on the State Flag signifies that it was born (got statehood) during the Civil War.  Most famous for legalized gambling, Nevada's biggest metro area, Las Vegas, with more than 2.2 million residents, was born around the turn of the 20th century (1905) - thanks to the railroad being built to link Los Angeles and Salt Lake City.  Vegas didn't really start to grow significantly and become a center for gambling until 1931 when construction on the nearby Hoover Dam brought thousands of young male workers to the area.
