On this date, October 17, in 1777, the Continental Army defending the Hudson River Valley, led General Horatio Gates, defeated the British forces, led by General Burgoyne. Many historians consider this victory to be a very important, strategic win for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Historian Edmund Morgan stated that it "was a great turning point of the war, because it won for Americans the foreign assistance (from France) which was the last element needed for victory (in the Revolutionary War)."
Today's Slice of Americana
During this season-long NFL celebration of its 100th anniversary we note that the first National Football League game (between 2 NFL teams) was played on October 3, 1920. The Dayton Triangles (pictured above) defeated the Columbus Panhandles by a score of 14 to 0.
