On yesterday's date, October 14, in 1947, then Captain Chuck Yeager, flying in the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis," became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. He "broke the sound barrier."
Charles 'Chuck' Yeager served in the military for 34 years - started as a Private ranked mechanic in the US Army Air Forces and quickly moved over to become a flight officer pilot during WWII. After WWII, he then transitioned over with all US Army Air Force personnel to become a member of the newly created US Air Force member. During his time in the US Air Force, he was promoted all the way up to the rank of Brigadier General (1-star). There are many fascinating stories about Chuck Yeager that we'll save for another day. But for now, here's a teaser. During WWII, on Oct. 12, 1944, he became the first pilot "ace in a day" in his fighter group by downing 5 German aircraft in one combat flight.

[ This P-51 Mustang, named Glorious Glen III, in honor of his wife, is the aircraft in which Yeager earned most of his aerial combat victories ]

On yesterday's date, October 14, in 1926, Winne-the-Pooh was first published. This book brought to life some of America's / the World's most popular fictional characters - Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore. Englishmen A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard wrote and illustrated the book. So, how does this qualifty as a 'Slice of Americana'? Well, in 1961, Disney licensed rights to 'Winnie the Pooh' (without hyphens) for movie production and other opportunties. And over the next 60 years, the story, in written and movie form, has never worn out with kids around the world.
