... Operation Uphold Democracy ...
On this date, September 19, in 1994, U.S. military forces, with approval from the United Nations, invaded Haiti. To oust the military dictator in power, General Josephy Raoul Cedras, and restore democracy to the citizens of Haiti, 23,000 troops, primarily from the 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions, were deployed. The invasion was largely uncontested and only 1 U.S. soldier was KIA. The military operation only lasted 6 months and fulfilled its mission.
