Today's Moment to Remember
[ First labor demonstration parade in NYC - Sept 5, 1882 = public domain image ]
Today is Labor Day
The first Labor Day celebration was a parade held on September 5, 1882, to showcase a variety of labor organizations in New York City (NYC). With the success and growth of the parade, labor leaders began pursuing a national 'Labor Day' through the rest of the 1880s. The Pullman Strike of 1894 in Chicago, where US Army and US Marshal members shot and killed workers holding a labor strike (protest), sped up the approval for the Labor Day holiday. Within 6 days of this sad event, Congress passed and President Grover Cleveland signed the law establishing Labor Day. It is celebrated on the first Monday of September.
