On May 8, 1846, Zachary Taylor, led his outnumbered Army forces into the Battle of Palo Alto against the Mexican Army - the first major battle of the Mexican-American War (pictured above). Taylor's forces defeated the Mexican forces and pushed them south of the Rio Grande River. Zachary Taylor, having become a Mexican-American War hero, rode his popularity to become the 12th President of the U.S..

In 2016, the Secretary of Defense ordered a review of 1,300 valor awards for potential upgrade. That review has netted 13 award upgrades for heroics by soldiers from aviation to infantry and from Special Forces to tank operations.
