Today's Moment to Remember

During this week in 1943, the Battle of Guadalcanal ended. This World War II conflict in the Pacific lasted 6 months. 2,000 American GIs and 9,000 Japanese soldiers were killed during this long battle.
As part of our focus on African-American military achievements this month, we recall 93rd Infantry Division action on Guadalcanal and beyond. This U.S. Army division, of 16,000, was the only African American division to see action in the Pacific during World War II. These soldiers served mainly as support personnel - building the airfields that would enable America to devastatingly bomb Japanese held islands. When they did get to actually fight in combat, the soldiers of the 93rd Infantry Division excelled. After victory at Guadalcanal, elements of the 93rd were shipped to nearby Bougainville, a territory of New Guinea, and they forced the surrender of the highest ranking Japanese officer to be captured during WWII along with thousands of Japanese soldiers.
