On this date (OTD), November 6th of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th U.S. President. He became one of our most admired Presidents after leading our Country through one of, if not, the toughest time - the Civil War and ending slavery.

On this date, November 6th of 1854, American conductor John Philip Sousa was born in Washington, D.C..  He was a 'Mustang' who served in the US Marine Corps (enlisted) and US Naval Reserve (officer).  In the Marine Corps, he served as an "apprentice" and "musician" and later became the director ("leader of the band") of the "President's Own," the US Marine Band.  His strong leadership, dedication to the Marine Band, and inspiring performances led folks to call him the "March King."  He composed some of our most recognized marching classics - like The Washington Post, Stars and Stripes Forever, and Semper Fidelis.
