Today's Star-Spangled Inspiration
... stated by Sam Houston when he refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy (the name of the group of states who tried to establish their own nation separate from USA - aka "The South" during the Civil War) ...
"In the name of the constitution of Texas, which has been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. I love Texas too well to bring civil strife and bloodshed upon her."
Today's Flag Status
Across America, the US Flag is at full staff, except in Vermont.

Today's Historical Moment to Remember
... President of the Republic of Texas ?! ...

On this date (OTD), October 22nd of 1836, Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first President of the Republic of Texas. His victory at the Battle of Jacinto secured the independence of Texas from Mexico in one of the shortest battles in modern history. Sam Houston was the only governor to oppose secession (the southern states breaking away from the northern states / United States to become their own nation).  He refused to make an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.  That led to Governor Houston being voted out of (removed from) office by the Texas secession convention on March 16, 1861.
