Today's Flag Status
Across America, Our U.S. Flag flies at full staff, except in Iowa and North Carolina.
Across America, Our U.S. Flag flies at full staff, except in Iowa and North Carolina.
In IOWA, the US and State Flags fly at half-staff on Saturday, Oct 20, from sunrise to sunset to honor a WWII fallen US sailor finally returning home for burial. Navy Fireman 2nd Class George C. Ford, of Lidderdale, IA was killed in action on December 7, 1941, when the USS Oklahoma was attacked by Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor. His remains were recovered and identified in April and are now returned to his family for burial in Glidden with full military honors.
In NORTH CAROLINA, US and State Flags are half-staff from sunrise Thu, Oct 18, until sunset on Sun, Oct 21 to honor North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Conner who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Columbus County on Wednesday.

Today's Historical Reminder
... "I shall return." is now fulfilled as "I have returned" ...

On this date (OTD), October 20th, of 1944, just a few days before the start of one of the largest naval battles ever off the coast of the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur sets foot again on Philippine soil. He was fulfilling the promise he gave after escaping the Japanese invading the Philippine Islands back in 1942 - uttering the famous words "I shall return."
Today's Slice of Americana - Music
... another rock group tragedy ...
... another rock group tragedy ...
On this date (OTD), Oct 20 in 1977, 4 members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in a plane crash in Mississippi. Obviously, the band was never able to perform at the level it had reached in the 70s.
Do you ever wonder about the origin of their name?
Interestingly, the group's name came from a mocking tribute to Leonard Skinner, the PE teacher of a band member who strictly enforced the school's policy against long hair. ;)
