On this date (OTD), September 23, 1806, after two years, four months, and ten days, the Lewis & Clark expedition is completed where it began in St. Louis.  The Lewis and Clark Expedition from May 1804 to September 1806, also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the US.  The expedition moved westward across the Great Plains, over the Continental Divide, and reached the Pacific Coast.  The expedition group, known as the Corps of Discovery, was made of a team of US Army volunteers - commanded by Captain Meriwther Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark.  The trip, ordered and funded by President Thomas Jefferson after the Louisana Purchase was completed  in 1803, was to map a good route across the new territory.
