... a Medal of Honor Monday ...
[ GO HERE to perform this week's Pre-Pledge Tribute (PPT) - ideally done on #FlagDayFriday to make Pledge of Allegiance more engaging and meaningful. ]
Today's Star-Spangled Inspiration
... is a quote from today's Medal of Honor honoree - John D. Hawk stated this upon receiving a Medal of Honor Flag in 2008 ...
"What I did was not such a big thing. I never did anything more than the people I served with. The [Medal of Honor] is a symbol and it stands for service, everybody's service. I did it for the people who were there and they were doing the same thing for me."

U.S. Army Sergeant John D. Hawk of Bremerton, Washington, displayed extraordinary heroism while serving in the 90th Infantry Division in France battling Germans on August 20, 1944.
Sergeant Hawk, manning a light machinegun, and his infantry unit were fighting off a German counterattack of tanks and infantry soldiers when a German artillery shell knocked out his gun and wounded him in the right thigh. Not phased by his wound, Sgt. Hawk grabbed a bazooka, stalked the tanks, and forced them to retreat. Then, when another German tank assault began, Sgt. Hawk climbed up a hill and exposed himself as the forward observer to help American tank destroyers properly lob rounds on the German tanks. Through a concentration of bullets and shrapnel, he ran back twice to tell the tank destroyers what distance adjustments to make. Sgt Hawk's firing directions destroyed 2 tanks, forced the retreat of another tank, and made the German infantry soldiers come out and surrender - 500 in total.
For risking his life above and beyond the call of duty, Sergeant John D. Hawk received the Medal of Honor and lived to tell about it.
