Our Flag flies at FULL STAFF across the USA, except in MA
In Massachusetts, the US and Commonwealth of MA flags have been placed at half-staff, until further notice, to honor Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna. He was shot and killed by an assailant on the morning of July 15th.
Today's Moment to Remember
On this date, July 16, of 1790, a site was designated for our nation's capital city. The Residence Act required that the President select a site on the Potomac River as the permanent capital for the United States and establish residence there within 10 years. So, about 6 months later, President Washington proclaimed the area of land where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers intersect to be our Nation's Capital - now known as the District of Columbia. And, he selected a French engineer, Pierre-Charles L'Enfant, to design and plan the city.
Today's Slice of Americana
On this date, July 16, in 1935, the world's first parking meter was installed in the buzzing metropolis of ...
... Oklahoma City?!
Yes, Oklahoma City (OKC) because the innovative engineers who invented it were at Oklahoma State University in OKC.
The parking meter was an instant success because it was a win-win-win situation - a win for the storekeepers to keep parking spaces turned over to new shoppers throughout the day, a win for shoppers because it provided close parking to their favorite stores, and a win for the city because it generated revenue from the meters.
