On this date, December 3, 1818, Illinois was admitted to the Union. Illinois is nicknamed the 'Land of Lincoln' because it is the state in which Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin. Today, Illinois, is considered a miniature version of USA - with a big city, Chicago, small industrial cities, strong agriculture regions, and many natural resources all within its state boundaries. Illinois the 5th most populated state while ranking 25th largest in terms of land area.

OTD in 1755, Charles Stuart, a famous American painter of portraits for George Washington, James Monroe, and Thomas Jefferson, was born in Rhode Island.
