On this date, September 26, in 1918, the Battle of Argonne, the last major battle of World War I, began. The French and American forces fought the Germans along a 40-mile line of defense. The battle, which the French and American forces won, lasted until the war ended on November 11, 1918. As the picture shows, the destruction of war left little of the forest.

34, of Houston; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Hovey, Korea;
killed Sept. 26 when he was struck by a mortar round in Ramadi, Iraq.
