TODAY'S REMINDER FROM OUR FLAG:
... Lincoln's proclamation to slaves ...

On this date, September 22, 1862, Lincoln released a warning that he would order the emancipation (freedom) of all slaves in any state that did not end its fighting against the Union by January 1, 1863.  His order took effect after none of the Confederate states surrendered.  This presidential order freeing slaves motivated many slaves to escape to the north to become free and some joined the Union Army.
